EMDR Therapy is a highly researched, evidence-based treatment designed to help individuals heal from trauma, distressing life experiences, and emotional wounds that continue to impact daily life. Rather than requiring extensive talk therapy, EMDR uses a structured approach that helps the brain process memories more effectively.

During EMDR, a trained therapist guides clients through sets of bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements, tapping, or sound tones—while the client focuses on a specific memory, emotion, or belief. This process helps the brain “reprocess” stuck or overwhelming material, allowing clients to experience relief, clarity, and a healthier emotional response.

EMDR is commonly used to treat:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Depression
  • Grief and loss
  • Childhood trauma
  • Abuse and neglect
  • First responder and workplace trauma
  • Distressing memories that still feel “charged”

Most clients report that EMDR helps them feel less triggered, more grounded, and more in control of their emotional world. As healing occurs, people often discover new, more positive beliefs about themselves—such as “I am safe,” “I did the best I could,” or “I am strong.”

At Decatur Counseling Center, EMDR is offered by trained clinicians in a safe, supportive environment where clients move at their own pace. Our goal is to help you process the past so it no longer disrupts your life.
